Kalloni Environmental Information Center

As further development of the islands UNESCO Geopark status, the Kalloni Environmental Information Center has been adopted by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. Funding has been allocated to promote the conservation of wildlife to the local communities. There is an important element that supports awareness to schools, essential for the longer term future of the islands conservation.
Eleni Galinou PhD, Professor Nickolas Zouros, the manager of the museum,  and colleagues in the fields of biology, forestry and the preservation of the islands past have worked hard to align the center under the umbrella of the Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. The museum is committed to promoting the importance of nature within the Kalloni Gulf and Lesvos in general and has secured a further three years of funding to expand the Centers new website lesvosbirds.gr/enand other projects as part of its UNESCO Geopark promotional activities which include images kindly provided by this groups members.
The Kalloni Environmental Information Center building is located on the track from Skala Kallonis to the Tsiknias River mouth and belongs to the Prefecture of North Aegean. A contract, signed in October 2020, between the Prefecture of North Aegean and the Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest enables the museum to manage the Center in Skala Kallonis for an initial 5 year period. Also, the Prefecture has funded the museum to run a program about the wetlands of western Lesvos and promote their importance through a series of actions (presentations, field trips, and educational activities for families and schools, etc).
